Just a quick post to describe Kihitzu School.
It has 4 classrooms and they are all the same, just concrete walls and floors, very dusty and hot. Only 2 of them have any chairs/desks, as the children have to make their own school furniture and many of them are just too poor too afford a desk or chair.
There are no windows or anywhere for the teachers to put up any displays. The teacher has only one piece of equipment and that's the blackboard and a small amount of chalk. Although the classroom is only the same size as ours there are 60 children to each class. The children only study Swahali, English, maths and Geography - no art, music.
The teachers would like to teach science but the don't have any equipment or books. The children don't write anything down because they haven't any paper or pencils - imagine how happy they were when Mrs Ward and myself gave them pens, pencils and paper! However the children are always so happy and learn (they have just completed their equivalent of SATs) but whether they do well or not most of them will not go on to secondary school as they have to pay and they can't afford that.
