Having spent several nail biting months waiting to hear if our application for a DFID Global Schools Partnerships grant would be successful, we finally heard the good news that we had been awarded the grant. Mrs. Revill and myself will be visit Kihuzu Primary School in Northern Tanzania.
For the last two weeks we have been frantically finalizing our travel arrangements, as well as fitting in several visits to the doctors to get all our vaccinations done in time. We will be flying out to Kilimanjaro on the 25th August. After an overnight stop in the nearby city of Arusha, the next day we will be spent travelling by bus over two hundred miles across the Serengiti, arriving at the town of Bunda, which will be our base for the next ten days.
For most of our stay, we will be meeting the local community and working with the school staff to discuss ideas for projects both schools can contribute equally to, with a goal to securing a long lasting partnership.
This is a brilliant opportunity for staff and children at Porchester to learn both similarities and differences between our own lives and those of the children of Tanzania, as well as exploring wider global issues.
