What's it all about?

Starting on Monday 7th June, pupils from class 6 at Porchester Junior School in Nottingham will begin to research information about Italy. Not only will we be looking at the World Cup squad, and previous teams, we'll also be looking at the culture, the climate, geographical features, the history, iconic people and places of Italy.

Finding Italy

Italy is a country in the South of Europe. It is on the edge of five seas: the Ligurian Sea, the Tyrrhenian Sea, the  Mediterranean Sea, the Ionian Sea, and the Adriatic Sea.

It has borders to the North with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia but no borders with other countries to the South.

Italy

In Italy they speak many languages including Italian, German, French and Slovene.

There are many different cities in Italy including Rome the capital, Pisa, Venice and many more.

The main religions are roman Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim.

The population is 58,133,509. Italy is famous for pasta, pizza, win and coffee.

Julius Caeser

Julius Caesar was born on 12th of july 100 BC. Julius Caesar died on 15th of march 44 BC.

When Julius Caesar was in a Colosseum and a gladiator was on the ground the other one would look at Julius Caesar.

He would put his thumb up which meant live. If he put his thumb down they die.

The month July was named after Julius Caesar.

Dino Zoff

Dino zoff was a famous goalkeeper for Italy he was a good one too.

he was born on the 28th febury 1942 he is the oldest player to win the world cup he was the 3rd best goalkeeper in the 20th century in the world.

he was born in mariano del friuli italy.

He used to play for juventus 1972.he won the world cup with italy in 1962 , 4 years before England won the world cup he was head coach for juventus from 1988 to 1990.

And he also used to play for udinese, mantova and napoli

The Roman Gladiators

The Roman Gladiatars wore a helmet with spikes on top of it. And a thing that went down the nose. A metal skirt a metal top a sword and a shield.

In Italy there was Rome so there were lots of gladiators that were fighting.

They sometimes had long hair and some times they were very very strong. Sometimes they were very very weak but not all of them got killed cause they had armour.

They was very brave too. Gladiators were volunteers who risked their lives by appearing in the arena.

Pizza in Italy

Pizza is usually topped with tomato sauce and mozzarello.

Pizza has become popular in lots of different parts of the world.

A shop or restaurant that makes and sells pizzas is called "pizzeria".

Nero the Roman emperor played a violin while Rome burned to a crisp. He led the Roman empire.

He also led the whole of Italy as well as the Roman Empire.

He ruled Rome with 2,705,603 people. Romans hated christians and killed them.

Venice

Venice is famous for canals all aroud with houses right next to them. There are no streets so if you want to travel you will have to go by boat.

There is alot of mosquitoes there and the weather is hot and if you want water you cant get it from the tap you will have to go out and buy bottles of water.

In Venice there are 116,226 families, there population is 271,073. It is in northen east Italy and there population name is Veneziani.

The patron saint is San Marco. The mayor is Massimo Cacciari. Venice has been known as the La Dominante Serenissima, Queen of the Adriatic city, of the water, city of masks, city of bridges, the floating city and city of canals.

Roman Soldiers

Roman soilders had a cape and a sword and a shield. Roman solders fight in war time and they where feather hats with feathes on the top of there hat.

Roman soldiers like to battle. Roman soldiers fight other soldiers. Roman soldiers ride on horses. The shield is really strong it is good in war time. Roman soldiers have a spear. The soilders are in legions. There are over 5,000. The roman soilders have a number each. When they train they have a wooden spear and a wooden sword and a wooden shield. They have a flag and a pole and on the flag they have a word wot says LEGXX to help to be brave.

The legate was the leader of a legion. One of the early legionary legates in Britain called Vespasian went on to become emperor.
