Shepherd's Wood

Shepherd's Wood is a wonderful place to visit in Summer.

You can hear the twitter of birds in the sky and the rustling of leaves on the many trees.

In Winter the landscape changes completely, the wood is silent and the snow lays in thick layers on the ground. The tree branches look bare without their leaves.

Many years ago, the wood was lived in and owned by the Shepherd family. Unfortunately seven years ago, there was a great fire and sadly the house and part of the wood were ruined.
Peter Shepherd, his wife Carol Shepherd and their children, Sarah and James Shepherd were very sorry that they had to say goodbye to the wood.

After much consideration, the people who used the wood to have picnics or to take a afternoon walk came to a decision. They thought it would be nice if the wood could be named in memory of the Shepherd family.

The old Disused Lighthouse

The sinister and haunted lighthouse has been known to be congested with ghosts. The tinted windows gleam in it's own light, as the moon glistens the night sky.
Many years ago a man named John M Finnigan lived there. He had two children and a loving wife. One summer's day John and his family went out on their sailing boat. They were making their way back and surprisingly the light went out. John, not knowing what to do, swerved and crashed into the rocks. Legend says that John and his family's ghosts are still in the lighthouse.
The lighthouse is known to have been built in the late 1500's. (The Tudor period.) With it's smashed windows and buckled frames, the lighthouse to the town is a very scary place. The bulb of the lighthouse has never been changed since the terrible crash occurred.
Nobody dare venture in the lighthouse ever since the John and his family died. The lighthouse is stationed right next to a small cottage.
Recently there have been plans to knock it down. The town has protested against this because it has been there for so long. The Mayor: Harry J Quimby, says that the lighthouse is one of the County's best attractions for scariness.
The lighthouse has been haunted for many years now and will never be forgotten. Historians have been studying the lighthouse for years but not one of them ever dare go in there.

The Village Church

The Village Church looks very old. The church walls are made from browny-grey stones that have begun to turn green with moss. There are four arched windows along the side of the building. A tall tower is at the end of it. It has a clock on the wall, and above that there are four small arched windows. Inside the tower is a bell that is rung with a rope from inside the church. The top of the tower has small pointy spires. The roof is made of slates. They are grey and brown.
A large wooden door next to the tower lets you inside. When you are inside you can see rows of wooden pews. Passing through the pews you can see all the stained glass windows. They have images of Jesus on them to explain the stories that are heard in the church. At the far end of the church you can see a big table that is called the altar. Behind this altar there is a cross on the wall with Jesus on. In front of the altar to the left is the pulpit. It is made of stone. At the top of the pulpit is the lectern. It is shaped like an eagle and made from brass.
To the right of the altar is the font. This is made from stone, and has a bowl inside it where the Holy water is placed for baptisms and christenings.
The organ faces the wall, and above the organs keys are lots of pipes for the sound to come out of.

Outside the church there is grass. A graveyard with lots of stone graves surrounds the church. A path of crushed stones goes from the church doors to the gate at the pavement. Also in the church yard are several Yew trees.

The vicar that works in the church is a wise and good man His name is Howard and he is about 69. His father died in a battle during the Second World War and his mother passed away when he was twelve. He came to the village to live with his aunt Hilda.
He wears a big black overcoat and has a white band around his neck.
He loves animals he has a parrot, Paulie, and a cat, Bitzy, that stay at his cottage on Main Street.
