Some days are better than others, and today is (so far) one of those good days. It started out well as I had a very interesting note passed to me from a child this morning as I was taking the register.
Before I mention the contents though, I need to explain the context it was received in. Last week we started some work in history on The Titanic (as we are currently celebrating 100 years of the school building, we're looking at events that have occured over the past 100 years). I had prepared a simple GDocs presenation - mostly blank pages! - and dropped it into the templates area for the children in class to use. We had started the work in class, and they had been using a page on the school wiki to look at photos / weblinks that might help them with their research. At the end of the first lesson the work wasn't finished, and so I reminded the class that as we were using GDocs, they would be able to load their work at home (those with access to the internet of course) and continue, maybe even finish.
Well this morning a note was passed to me that simply read;
"xxxx had a go at The Titanic work last night but couldn't save work to the template (of course!) I showed her that you need to "File" "Rename" it to be able to save, which she did - called LWTitanic. She wanted to share it with you too.
I showed her also how to copy and paste between two windows but think that might be classed as cheating?"
(Smiley face at the end of the note)
Apart from the last comment - depends on whether the whole text is copied, or just key phrases / dates that she can then add to, I was really chuffed to read it. Not only is a child using our self build LP well at home, but she's got a parent tucking into it too - and with success on the first attempt. I just hope lots of other parents take a look into the LP too and see how easy it is to use. Afterall, that was one of the main considerations when we started to builld it.
