I've been working on another web project at the moment, and once I completed it I needed to domain map the actual location for the website to the domain name that had been bought for it. I was using 1and1.co.uk (as the domain name was bought from them).
In previous domain mapping sagas I've had to phone up and speak to customer support and beg them to make a CNAME change to the domain records - because it was physically impossible for me to make those changes. It often took days to get it all sorted. Sometimes, it took over a week with several calls to 1and1 before everything was sorted.
However I was pleasantly suprised whilst going through the process this time to discover that not only can I alter the Forwarding path in the 1and1 control panel, but I can now edit CNAME details myself. Brilliant! it made everything so much easier.
1. Go to the site actually hosting the website and domain map it to the new URL.
2. Go to the domain hosts and change the forwarding path and CNAME record.
3. Wait a few hours whilst the records are updated.
Voila! All working fine. Lovely!
